Climate Facts

Amidst all the speculation and misinformation regarding climate change, it’s useful to have a few climate facts at our disposal. For instance, one commonly cited fact by those who oppose global warming is that the earth has always been undergoing temperature swings. They cite evidence such as the tropical plant matter found beneath the ice in Antarctica. Or they point to the ice age.

While it’s an undisputable climate fact that the earth has always been changing, it is equally undisputable that the climate change of the last century is the fastest we can find evidence for. This means that whether or not the earth was in a warming or cooling trend previous to the industrial revolution, mankind since then has precipitated the swiftest shift in climate on record.

Now that’s not to say a swifter change has never occurred. There could have been one. What that particular climate fact is saying however, is that we have no evidence to support the position that humanity is not affecting the earth’s climate with our habits. So opponents of global warming have fallen back to the position that we aren’t affecting it “that much”.
